Tips To Protect Your Eyes This Summer

As the weather becomes warmer and the sun begins to shine brighter, the outdoor activities start to make a comeback. The most anticipated season of the year arriving, it’s important that we protect not just our skin but our eyes as well. This article will help you make informed decisions about the protective gear you choose, advise you on how to prevent exposure to contaminants in your daily environment, and allow you to understand the importance of protecting children's and your overall eye health.

1. Wear the RIGHT sunglasses

Everyone knows we should protect our skin from ultraviolet radiation (UVR), but what most don’t know is that we should also aim to protect our eyes from UVR as well. Consistent UVR exposure can have harmful effects such as cataracts, photo conjunctivitis, melanoma in the retina, eyelid skin cancer, and more. There are 3 ranges of UVR: UV-A, UV-B, and UV-C. Most eye damage is caused by UV-B exposure.

Purchasing sunglasses that contain 100 percent protection against UV-A and UV-B rays, is the best way to protect your eyes against UVR exposure. So the next time you’re purchasing a pair, make sure that protection is offered. Remember to be consistent and wear your sunglasses every time you go outside, even on those cloudy days.

2. Don’t Forget Your Goggles!

Whether you’re a frequent swimmer or just taking a quick dip in the pool, your eyes can become easily irritated. Chemicals, such as chlorine and saline that are meant to disinfect pools can be harmful to your eyes. Prevent yourself from getting “swimmer’s eye” by wearing goggles. This applies, not only to the pool, but the ocean or other natural bodies of water as well because they can contain other contaminants that can hurt your peepers.

In 2008, a medical study revealed that frequent chlorine exposure can negatively affect your corneal epithelium strength. The corneal epithelium is a protective layer that blocks pathogens or irritant from entering your cornea. If there is damage to the corneal epithelium, this increases the chances of corneal abrasion or other eye injuries.

3. Start Them Young

Don’t let your children's eye health suffer. Protect and educate your child about the dangers of UVR exposure. Children are more likely to spend their time playing outside, especially during summer. Meaning they’re prone to be exposed to UVR

Maintain your child’s eye health the same way you would maintain yours - Apply sunscreen, particularly on their face. Have your child wear a hat while playing outside. And also make sure your child is wearing sunglasses with 100 percent UVR protection.
